J.K. Rowling

Before Harry Potter, British author and philanthropist Joanne Rowling, known by her pen name J. K. Rowling encountered relative poverty as a single parent, battled depression over her mother's untimely death, and experienced domestic abuse from her first husband. When Rowling completed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in June 1995, twelve publishers rejected the manuscript.

She refers to herself as "the biggest failure I knew" but credits much of her success to her failure. She is the perfect example that success can come to you if failure gives you focus. At her Commencement Address at the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association in June 2008, J.K. Rowling said:

"Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was and began to direct all my energy to finish the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one area where I truly belonged. I was set free because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life."

J.K. Rowling has enjoyed enormous commercial success as a writer and was named the world's highest-paid author by Forbes in 2008, 2017, and 2019.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Gail Winfrey, "The Queen of All Media," is an American talk show host, author, television producer, and philanthropist with a net worth of $3.5 billion in 2021 and is considered the richest African-American of the 20th century. Winfrey was born to a single teenage mother in rural Mississippi and was later raised in inner-city Milwaukee. She doesn't hide that she was molested during her childhood and early teenage years and became pregnant at 14 and that her son was born prematurely and died in infancy.

She was fired from her first job as a TV news co-anchor for the local evening news because the show's executives considered her too emotionally invested and improvisational in the stories she reported on.

Oprah said:

"Failure is a great teacher and, if you are open to it, every mistake has a lesson to offer."
